The majority of us would like to believe that if we found money on the ground, we would return it.
One man who had nothing discovered a sum of money that would change his life, and he didn’t hesitate to return it to its rightful owner.
When he discovered the $10,000 check in New Haven, Connecticut, Elmer Alvarez was on the streets.
Elmer could have done anything with that check because he had been dealt a bad hand in life, but he chose to give it back to its rightful owner.
He ultimately embarked on a route that would improve his life as a result of his honesty.
The cash belonged to realtor Roberta Hoskie, who misplaced the check at a busy crossroads and wasn’t alerted to its loss until the following day.
When Elmer discovered the check, his first thought was, “I had to look for this person.”
He claimed he had not considered keeping the money for himself.
“I decided to turn my life around, so I never thought about it. Elmer told CBS News, “I’ve been clean for three years.
Roberta was resolved to track down Elmer and express her gratitude after learning that the check had been returned.
She remarked, “I anticipated to find a guy all nice, clean shaven, and in a blue suit.
Instead, she met Elmer, who was telling Roberta that he was homeless and had brought a friend there because his English wasn’t very good.
It disproved stereotypes, Roberta claimed.
Elmer sobbed when Roberta gave him a check as a thank-you gift.
Roberta broadcast her encounter with Elmer live on Facebook in an effort to dispel common misconceptions about the homeless.
Roberta, a teen mother who ended herself living in a shelter with barely $400 a month to support herself and her son, is all too aware of the variety of factors that can lead to homelessness.
Roberta was able to climb out of poverty and now owns a successful, multimillion dollar real estate business.
Roberta has assisted Elmer throughout the year since they first met. She not only helped him locate housing and paid his rent for seven months, but she also paid for real estate school so he could work for her business.
Today, the two are preparing to construct a transitional home for young adults and teenagers who are homeless that will offer the services They deemed essential.
“I have experienced homelessness. Nobody should live like that, he declared.
Elmer returned that check without anticipating any sort of payment. Elmer now has the life he deserves because to people’s growing understanding of the human aspect of those forced to live on the streets.
When you provide a hand to someone, they never forget and frequently return the favour, as Roberta and Elmer are doing now.
