Jotto was just a month old when he tragically fell into a well and got separated from his herd. Fortunately, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) rescued him and brought him to an elephant orphanage in Kenya. Here, he could recover and prepare for his eventual return to the wild. Little did the rescuers know that Jotto would form a special bond not with another elephant, but with an ostrich named Pea.
The Story of Pea
Pea’s journey to the elephant orphanage began in 2014, when DSWT staff rescued her and her brother Pod while saving a baby elephant. While Pod eventually returned to the wild, Pea stayed behind, finding a new family among the orphaned elephants. She has since made herself at home, blending seamlessly into the herd.
A Unique Bond
“It’s safe to say that orphaned ostrich Pea most definitely believes she is part of the elephant herd, and little Jotto is more than happy to enjoy a cuddle with his feathered friend,” DSWT shared. These tender moments at the Nairobi Nursery showcase the incredible bond between these two orphans, both given a second chance at life.
